How to wash bikinis and swimsuits to make them last longer

With the arrival of summer, bikinis and swimsuits become our favorite garments. However, to keep them in good condition and enjoy them for several seasons, it is essential to know how to wash them properly, as they are delicate garments that require special care. Here is a complete guide with the best tips and tricks for washing your swimwear:

How to wash a bikini or swimsuit?

First of all, it is important to read the care label of the garment, as it may have specific recommendations from the manufacturer that will help you maintain its shape and color. After that, follow these tips to make your swimwear last several seasons in perfect condition:

1. Rinse your garments as soon as possible after use.

Chlorine from swimming pools, sea salt and sweat can damage the fibers of your swimsuit and cause it to lose its color. Therefore, it is essential to rinse it with cold water as soon as you finish wearing it. This will help remove residue and prolong the life of the garment.

If you can't wash it right away, we recommend that you at least clean it with a little drinking water to remove the heaviest residue.

2. Avoid using the washing machine

The best way to wash bikinis and swimsuits is by hand, the sudden movement of the washing machine and spin cycles can deform the garments and wear out the elastic fibers.

But, if you have to use the washing machine for any reason, put your swimwear in with a wash bag to avoid snagging or tearing the garments.

3. Always wash garments in cold water

To wash bathing clothes either by hand or in the washing machine, we must always use cold water for it. The hot water deteriorates and damages the lycra, material that composes in its majority to the bikinis and swimsuits.

4. Use detergent for delicate garments

The usual detergents we use for clothes can damage the fabrics of our swimwear as they can be very aggressive. We recommend that you use detergents for delicate clothes if you want to extend their useful life.

Also, it is very important not to rinse the garments with shower gel or hand soap, as they deteriorate the fibers.

The use of fabric softener is totally forbidden, since it is the cleaning product that deteriorates the garments the most.

5. Dry the garments in the shade

After washing bikinis or swimsuits, never wring them to remove excess water. Instead, press them gently between two towels to absorb the moisture. Then, let them air dry on a flat surface in the shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can dry out the lycra and fade the colors.

6. Proper storage

To keep your swimsuits in good condition when not in use, store them in a cool, dry place. Avoid folding or stacking them with other garments that may deform them. It is better to hang them or place them in a breathable fabric bag.

Properly washing and caring for your bikinis and swimsuits will not only maintain their appearance and functionality, but will also allow you to enjoy them for much longer. By following these simple tips, your swimsuits will look like new season after season.
